Graphic design – part 1

After establishing a rough idea for my project (Run City game, explained in the previous post), I started considering how it could look like. I’m quite passionate about graphic design and I want to make my app look as professional as I can. Although, I still had to be realistic and remember that I won’t have a team of graphic designers and 3D model artists, so the concept had to be simple.

The whole concept is yet to be planned and I’m still developing the ideas about the features and functionality, but having some time off, I started working on the fun part of my project. There are many strategy mobile games using various techniques and design styles for the buildings and objects. My game will be 3D, but I don’t have a broad knowledge about creating spatial models. Even though I want to expand it and learn 3D modelling next year, I had to look for a more simple, yet effective way for now. There’s a super popular game called Crossy Road, and it’s gameplay is far from what I’ve planned, but I really liked how the game looks. The designers made use of very simple blocks and shapes, complemented by vivid colours. It looks very simple, but also pleasing at the same time.

Having discovered an interesting 3D effect available in Adobe Illustrator, I started experimenting with various blocks and designs. I made a few buildings that could be possibly featured in the game, but for now, it was just a pure experimentation. I’m not even sure yet, if the angle that I chose for my first ideas will provide a correct view with further building. I’ll have to make sure that objects don’t cover each other and provide a clear view of what the user has built. Just like it works in the Crossy Road.

As I said, for now it’s just the matter of first ideas and a very rough concept. Although, I’m quite confident about the direction of my work and which style to approach it with. I’m also aware of the fact that I have to be careful with brands (such like Nike), but it’s just a suggestion of how some big companies could advertise their products within the game – in form of interesting objects and buildings.
